Riverside Road
Location
Riverside Road is located just south of St Albans city centre, off London Road. The fishery sits alongside the River Ver, with Verulam Golf Course to the east and the Alban Way public footpath running along its western boundary.
Overview
Acquired by Verulam Angling Club in 1969, Riverside Road was transformed from a disused cress bed into one of the club’s premier fisheries. The main lake was excavated in 1970, with an extension added in 1983.
Today, Riverside is the club’s flagship venue, featuring the clubhouse and meeting facilities, making it the centre for many club events and activities.
The lake is full of character, with bays, peninsulas, reed beds, lily pads and floating islands that provide excellent fish-holding features while also creating valuable wildlife habitat.
Fishing
Riverside offers consistent sport for anglers of all abilities. The lake holds:
- Carp to around 12lb
- Bream
- Crucian Carp
- Carp hybrids
- Tench
- Roach
- Rudd
- Perch to around 2lb
Carp are often found around the lake’s natural features, including reeds, lily pads, tree roots and overhanging cover.
The venue is also popular for club matches, regularly producing impressive weights, while pleasure anglers can often enjoy even better catches.
Simple tactics are all that’s needed, with maggots, bread, sweetcorn, hemp, pellets and meat all proving effective throughout the year.
Facilities
- Parking around much of the lake
- Accessible swims for less able anglers
