Commentary by Allan Bayman:

After a pretty horrendously windy Saturday I was looking forward to some shelter and calmer weather. The canal cut offers some protection from the elements. Looking for some shelter were 20 hopefuls. We met on the bridge over the canal and there seemed to be a fair few fish topping so we were hopeful for a bit of action. The canal looked very even with little features on the far bank apart form some overhanging trees so I fancied a low number draw to save me a walk with the high numbers being further form the meeting point.Brian ended up at the far end with George and Pete Fell being nearest the meting point. I ended up with peg 4 which looked OK and canal guru Steve Burfoot was two pegs down in 6
At the start I went out on a very light rig with bread and started catching tiny roach immediately. John to my left had a few decent skimmers but not much else seemed to be going on. A little later Steve Burfoot connected with something lumpy pulling out a fair bit of elastic whilst fishing tight to the far bank in a deeper margin with over 2ft. A bit later a very nice perch was in his net. During the course of the next hour more joined the first one.

AlanT was catching well reporting a good first half of the match with roach on punch and skimmers on squats. This kind of light line fishing is not something Im do often so expected to get a trouncing from silver fish gurus like Paul Bangs.
At the half way point the boats had been quite rare and considerate when passing so didnt cause too many problems and I was still catching well on punch. I was sure Brian would be having had considerable experience on canals fishing some canal leagues. Another persons showing their canal pedigree was Steve Burfoot. Hed now had a few chunky perch, a skimmer and some silvers. The wind was the main issue as it was getting a bit gusty hampering presentation.

Apart from Steve B nobody seemed to be catching anything of any size and the small fish seemed a bit scarce in most pegs in the low numbers. I was still catching well on punch but generally very small fish.  I had a quick burst of a couple of skimmers then hooked something decent which shocked me as much as the bream Id hooked which immediately came to the surface flapped as if waving goodbye and promptly threw the hook. A couple more small skimmers followed then the lost bigger fish seemed to spook the others and the skimmers went.

The last hour the wind was now continually rubbish making things very hard but I was still catching when I could present the bait correctly and after a couple of rig tweaks started to catch well in bursts but still smallish fish although better with the odd 3-4oz fish. Steve looked to have romped away with it from our end but with people like Paul bangs and Brian being great with the silvers and AlanT and Colin Rennsions recent form it was very unclear whod be at the sharp end.

At the whistle a number of people packed up without weighing in it had been a very tough day. Brian put 3lb 13oz  on the scales which was a good weight, matched to the ounce by Mark Jones. A few ounces behind was Roger Smith with 3lb10oz and Steve Clark another 2 ounces behind on 3lb 8oz. AlanT had used his loaf to switch between bread and squats to get a mix of roach and skimmers for 4lb 13oz. Colin has had a good spell once the debris cleared getting 2lb 6oz the same as Cliff Myers. All eyes were on Steve Burfoot who's lovely net of perch and bits went 7lb 12oz. My roach and skimmer net went a surprising 6lb 13oz, quite a bit more than Id thought
.

So the second championship event saw Steve Burfoot fish a very tidy match winning on perch, me in second and Alan Thomas taking third.

Steve with his lumps - taken at a rare moment when the sun shone and the wind dropped
