Venue : Riverside Road

Match : Championship #1 - Rodney Lee Trophy

Commentary by Allan Bayman:

Wow, 31 names, 31 pegs -  what a turn out. Riverside Road had been fishing well so there was a lot of expectation but considering past matches we should have not been so hopeful.

The draw saw more pegs in the white zone than previously. I got 28 one of my old favourites before the marginal tree was ripped out. AlanG was on 22 minus the bramble and Brian was on 2 where Iíd been knocking out roach carp and bream. The hottest pegs 52 and 53 were taken by Paul Bangs and Chris Smith. Roger was on 37 near where AlanT had done well last time. Poor Stan was back again for the 2nd match running on 25. Normally a good peg - would it produce this time?

At the whistle everyone went out and very little happened. Keith opposite on 12 had a couple of silvers but not much else. Then Andy K on 14 landed a nice trout - which don't count. I went out on the method down my left hand margin and after a minute the rod pulled round violently but there was nothing there.

A bit later Keith opposite me was having a tussle with something chunky that he lost in the margins. He reckons it was a big perch. AlanT also lost a carp he pricked in the margins. Stan also landed a big scale to go with some roach and, on 19, Cliff was getting the odd silver and crucian.

By midway, for most of us it was looking like it was going to be dire with very few signs of fish.  Meanwhile on peg 22 AlanG was catching under his feet on the method mainly small stockie carp which seemed to have bypassed the net splitting the red zone (restocked) with the white zone. Bank walker reportes suggested very little was being caught anywhere.

A little later Richard Wheatland netted a very lumpy bream. AlanT got a small tench around a pound. The bream now started spawning under AndyKs feet perhaps explaining the apparently lack of fish coming to our bait.

In the second half of the match I worked out how to get bites by putting in 4 maggots and a balls of groundbait the size of a dice and going in straight over the top into the cloud but the fish were very small apart form a good bream I hooked that came off within a few seconds, grr.

As the match progressed pretty much nothing major was going on. Pegs 52 and 53 were producing a bit but generally it was lousy.

Richard on 9 managed another bream before the whistle, which was going to get him a good result.

At the weight in the results showed a very poor days fishing. Normally around 20-30lb is a wining weight with a few backing weights. Today there were only two double-figure weights AlanG on 22 with a net full of carp & crucians for 15lb 8oz and Chris Smith on 53 just shy of 14lb - a large hole in his keepnet probably costing him the win. Paul bangs next door on 52 look third with a mixed bag of  9lb 14oz. Roger was just behind with 9lb 9oz. Richardís chunky bream gave him 5th with 8lb 13oz. Out of 31 anglers there were 10 DNW's and only 10 weights exceeding 5lb. A truly abysmal day at Riverside Road for June considering how well it's been fishing with pleasure bags of 50lb+ reported from the previous Sunday.

Alan Gardner wins the Rodney Lee trophy for the second year running

After the match carp appeared from nowhere and a group of around eight big chub could be seen in peg 9 by the nets that divide the red from the white zone. So the fish are definitely there just not in the mood for food.
