Match††††† : Championship #14

Write Up by Allan Bayman:

Our matches at Riverside always attract a lot of interest and hardly surprising with the venue in such sparkling form this year. Regular good weights of carp bream and silvers in delightful surroundings, what more could you want ?

This time we had 33 booked on so it was always going to be cosy and pegging tight. Before the match there were discussions on the clubs Facebook match page, as to  where it would be won from. Thoughts seemed to be peg 20 to 22, peg 2, 30 and maybe pegs in the 50s. 48 had some recent form with carp so was expected to feature. I felt 9, 11 and 12 could be handy if the carp didnít feed and silvers would be the order of the day.

After a cracking breakfast thanks to Brian, Kevin and Andy everyone deposited their raffle prizes and we did the draw.

Martin Boddy had drawn peg 2 a few times and got it again. Paul Bangs had high expectations from peg 22 which has probably been the most consistent winter winner. Colin Rennison was on 30 and Andy Zouvani was on 48. Mark Jones was on 9 and Neil Anderson on 11.

The match started fairly slowly with the water being a bit clear but fairly early on Martin Boddy had a carp and Jon Owen had a skimmer.  As the match went on it was clear bites would be at a premium with plenty of people having no action after the first 30 minutes.

I was on peg 5 and hoping to pick up carp long to the island. A couple of missed bites on bread then worm then nothing left me frustrated at a possible missed opportunity.

As the match progressed Jon Owen was getting more skimmers and Martin Boddy picked off more carp. Neil on 11 was finding the crucians in amongst the lilies and Mark Jones was picking up roach and skimmers. I was now getting a few indications long and the odd small roach and Steve Burfoot located a nice bream but overall it was slow but gathering pace, slowly.

At the halfway point it looked like a battle between Jon Owen and Martin Boddy with the chasing pack some way behind.

Plenty of roach were being caught but mainly very small ones and a few bream. It was enjoyable and challenging once I located the main shoal in my peg and had plenty of bites.

The second half of the match saw the silvers come on in my peg and Steve Burfoot started getting a few and I could see Mark Jones latch into a proper bream. Jon Owen slowed down and as the match drew to a close Brian Lakin nicked a carp on bread, Martin latched into another carp and Josh had a good carp at last knockings.

Martin took a good win with his almost 22lb, with a close battle for the next podium places. Jon Owen's good early skimmer run giving him 2nd with 15lb 2oz just ahead of Josh with 14lb 8oz. Cliff had done well off 46 with just over 13lb then the silvers bags came up with Mark Jones on peg 9 with 11lb 5oz, 3 oz ahead of Brianís two carp and bits from peg 21, a few ounces ahead of Phil Rule next door on peg 20 and Neil Anderson had 10lb 14oz of mainly crucians from peg 11. Rich McCorry was the last angler in double figures with a solid 10lb from peg 27.

Peg 22 and 48 had not produced as expected although they did see carp action unlike most pegs.

Than you to everyone who came along and for your understanding around the pegging which was tight. Everyone had a good time and we raised plenty for charity which is what it is all about.

Have a great Christmas everyone and donít forget we have a match on the 30th at Riverside if you have not booked on yet and the next championship match is at Southend Farm on the 13th of January.
