Venue      : Road Lake, Puddledock Farm

Match      : Championship #16

Write-up by Allan Bayman

Our final match of the championship saw us visiting a venue new to us; Puddledock Farm, Road Lake. As it produces good silvers sport and some carp, even in the worst conditions it should provide a decent level of action for everyone. Add in a short(ish) journey, great café, comfortable pegs, close parking and tackle shop onsite it really does have a lot of what we look for in a fishery for club matches.

15 people booked on which was a little disappointing considering the times we get grumbles about not offering fishing for silvers. With Colin Rennison having taken the championship it was really a battle for the remaining  podium places.

The match itself was fairly close apart from Kev Hawes. Drawn facing into an ice-cold wind he worked out that there were some good fish under a bankside tree and started picking off quality carp on corn. Alan Thomas had a good start with three carp early on and Colin Rennison also had three carp early on.

Most people around the lake were picking up small roach and skimmers. I was really struggling with the wind where I was but getting plenty of bites at short range and enjoying getting so much action after a fairly dire last couple of months.

As the match progressed Kev Hawes started giving the rest of the field an absolute hammering, landing quality carp after quality carp. Brian Lakin was catching at an impressive rate and building a very good bag of silvers. Ash Adams found some quality roach to 1lb 4oz in amongst the smaller samples and Kev Laird was building a nice net of fish too as was Steve Burfoot. Alan Thomas managed to snare a couple of proper bream to add to his smaller fish and carp.

At the end there was one clear winner; Kev Hawes with a summer like 78lb net of quality carp ! Colin Rennison continued his excellent form to take yet another top-3 place, coming in second ahead of Brian who pipped Alan Thomas for third place on the day. The results sheet showed some good bags of silvers despite the very poor conditions. Half the field recording double-figures was very respectable considering many had not fished there before.

Colin's had a good year as this 23lb bag proves If the cap fits....

The championship ended up with Steve Burfoot securing second place overall and third place going to Allan Bayman and Stan Kiddle.

Feedback on the venue was very good for those who replied and we will certainly think about booking this venue again as there really were not too many downsides.
