Venue      : Frogmore

Match      : Evening League #4

Match Write-up: by Stan Kiddle

A wonderful warm evening found 16 hopefuls ready to bag up. Frogmore's form has been amazing in recent weeks and the venue is spot-on thanks to the hard work of the fishery team.

With venue experts such as Steve Burfoot drawing 29 and Barrie Cowley on 3 there was the chance of some big weights. I drew 24, one we often leave out as it's bang opposite 11 on the narrow bit. Flyer peg 23 stayed in the bag as Mark Jones, who had booked in, couldn't get there in time from work. Andy Z, the league leader, drew 19...not perhaps a peg that would suit his method feeder approach. Could he adapt?

Being tucked away on 24 it wasn't possible to see much of what was happening but it was clear that Andy T opposite and Neil to my right were not catching much. I had decided to focus on the near margin which was solid with little carp. So little in fact that many were not even 4oz. And to catch them required small baits that the roach would nick first. A big chunk of paste was roach-proof but the little carps would simply whittle it away without moving the float.

In time I found a few tricks that produced the odd bigger fish and at the full-time whistle I was happy with my efforts. But it turned out that up on the first two islands there were a lot of carp getting caught on pellet fished shallow. Those at the far end had much more of a struggle. Dave McGrath found a few big fish from 14 but lost as much as he landed. Best result went to Dan who fished cat meat for good fish steady across the evening.

So with the scales starting at Allan's peg he set the bar high at 35.05 but was immediately relegated to 2nd when Steve put an excellent 40.06 on the scales including some very chunky fish. My mixed bag went 25.13, well behind Dan's 3rd place of 33.14 and with Andy Z not weighing in it's now my turn to sit at the top. A reminder that the league is best 4 from 6 so still a number of anglers who can take the title with two matches to go; Riverside on the 13th and Frogmore on the 20th.
