Match Write-up: by Allan Bayman

Storms ahead of the match provided some comfort from the high temps but the heavy down poor of cool water was likely to have some impact on the fishing. We had a reasonable turn out of 17 which meant we could leave out most of the weak pegs but a couple of people were going to get one of the slow areas without much of a feature to fish too. We purposely left out pegs 1 and 2 as there are notoriously poor in matches.

As the draw Steve Burfoot got 23 the out and out flyer and Stan 11 one of the next best. Chris Budden got record holding peg 27 and Steve McCarthy got 19 one with very good form. I was on 30 which has not produced for quite some time since the island has eroded back so I wasnít at all hopeful.

At the start it wasnít long before a few fish were being caught and Dan Patrick and Kev Laird on pegs 4 and 3 were catching some small carp. Ash on peg 24 got a couple of good bream early on and Andy Zniemer had carp from the start and it wasnít long before Stan and Steve on 23 were getting action. So whilst most were getting action it was slow going on peg 30.

As the match progressed Danís early run slowed down and Kev carried on catching well, tight to the island of peg 3 and you could see the water around the island clouding up heavily. Steve Burfoot was finding a lot of fish on 23 but was foul hooking a lot of them. Neil Anderson on peg 9 was fishing a tidy match to find bream and carp and Barrie Cowley was playing a patient waiting game on the paste on peg 13 to snare the odd decent fish.

Chris Budden had enough of the tough fishing and left peg 27 early and I was tempted to join him as peg 30 was dire with a skimmer and a couple of micro carp and roach to show but it would only take a couple of carp to turn up to turn things around.

As we came to the last 3rd of the match Kev Laird was resting his island line but going back out and quickly getting some action. Steve Burfoot was loosing a lot of foul hookers but the fish we was getting were of a good stamp and same was sure for Barrie.

Very few signs of anything were visible on peg 30 and John next to me on 29 was having a equally miserable time. A switch to my margin line got me a surprise skimmer but it was mainly micro perch with a few roach and hybrids out a bit further and then they backed off. A very good carp breaking me did little to raise hopes.

The last half hour saw Kev pick up a quick run of slightly better fish and sure he would be in the running as would Steve. Neil had also been fishing a good match from rarely rated peg 9 and Barrie was patiently waiting for those better fish and finding some too.

We finished at 3pm and got on with the weigh in, as the dark clouds overhead looked ready to release a lot of rain on us ! The first double figure weight was Andy Zniemer on peg 25 with 11lb 8oz and Ash Adams next door had 12lb 9oz and them Steve on 23 set the pace with 29lb 9oz.  Barrie on 13 had a good showing with 19lb and Stan on 11 had 16lb 8oz. Neil was next to break the 20lb mark with a good 21lb 5oz from peg 9. Dave McGrath on peg 6 had double figures with 14lb 6oz but then we got to Kev Laird who had 26lb 8oz to take second. So apart from Kev Laird on peg 3 most of the top weights came from an area a few pegs either side of 23.

Why it fished so badly I donít know but something didnít feel quite right.

Lets hope our next match at Newland Hall, Moat Lake on the 6th of August is better.
