Venue      : Fairlands

Match      : Championship #9

Write Up by Allan Bayman:

It was nice to be back at Fairlands after a couple of decent matches before in previous years. It was a shame though to have the first cold night of the year before with tempt dipping down to just 3 degrees.

The venues is a large man-made bowl in the middle of a busy park in Stevenage , so certainly something different and with bream and feeder the normal winning tactics it would be nice to leave the poles in the bag.

As it turned out the cold snap seemed to really kill sport and whilst everyone seemed to enjoy the challenge the fish seemed shoaled up in one small area.

Dan Patrick started early picking off some bream whilst most struggled. As the match went on the odd bream showed but later in the match Simon George latched into a few better fish then Julien Fletcher on the next peg got into them too. Josh seemed to be on the end of the shoal and picked off 3 better bream.

Elsewhere most struggled for bites on the feeder but those who switched focus to the roach were rewarded with plenty of action even if the fish were small. I made the switch early after a boring hour staring at a motionless tip and enjoyed catching plenty of roach mainly small but got plenty of bites.

At the end it was clear one end had done well as 1st to 4th were in a line with the weights going down by a couple of pounds with each peg you went to the left. I managed 5th with mainly roach ahead of Rich McCorry who plundered the roach too.

A few big fish were hooked with Dan loosing something big as did Matt Young and Andy Z being bitten off ! Any one of these could have made a big difference on a tough day.

Overall it was challenging and hard but enjoyable to be doing something different from the normal carp dominated commercials.
