Secret Squirrel

For the first time in 174 issues on this web site, we have a cartoon mammal as the lead picture. Why, you ask, well read on and all will become clear.

This year it has been very apparent that many VAC waters are producing good catches. Our fishery managers are witnessing big fish and multiple catches but, unlike in seasons past, there's a great reluctance to have a picture published, preferring to avoid the risks of a 'circus' at the venue as a consequence of a month's fame.

So, at the risk of upsetting a few people, here's a brief summary of the top catches on our waters this Summer!
  Tench   9lb+ Moor Mill
  Barbel 14.10 Radwell
Roach 2lb+ Leasey Bridge
Carp 27lb+ Moor Mill & Smallford
  Carp 35lb+ Aldenham
  Carp 30lb + Lancaster Lake
  Perch 3lb+ Bellows Mill
  Chub 5lb + Marford
All in all, not a bad result for our members who are putting in the effort. Remember that in most cases, success with big fish is the reward for significant patience and effort. Do not expect to bank a monster on your first visit nor assume other anglers will point you to the magic spots. But put some thought to it, make you own luck and, you never now, you might have a big fish on the bank and a picture or two to send to me as well.

* * Keepnet Ban * *

Due to an outbreak of KHV in August at a small number of Essex venues we have a temporary ban on keepnets and venues where they would normally be allowed. Remember that the best way to avoid spreading anything from another water is the ensure that all your nets, net-bags, landing pole floats, unhooking mats and weigh-slings are bone dry.

New memberships: Another great year of the VAC as membership numbers rush past the 2,100 number. If you're looking to join then you may wish to know that, as well as postal applications, you can sign-up at either Verulam Tackle Shop in St Albans or Colney Tackle in Hazeldine Rd, London Colney. For all the details please click the Subscriptions link above. Please be reminded that all able-bodied adult members are expected to undertake at least one work-party before the end of April and failure to do so attracts a work-party levy when renewing membership equal to the prevailing joining fee. This is to ensure that work-party obligations are not avoided by simply rejoining as a new member.

Your Contribution

A reminder that the Webmaster welcomes your contributions. In the absence of anything recently here's a selection of great pics from past issues.

Has anyone caught one of our grassies at Bellows Mill lately. Dick Bateman had this 23lb'er last Summer.

Can't not include a pic of Keith Speers....this is the great man with one of the big Moor Mill bream

Another great fish from Moor Mill from a few years back, Josh Blavins with his 4-10 record crucian.

Our resident predator fan, Paul 'Hornet' Chilton with a chunky Bellow's perch

One of the biggest barbel from Marford.

This 11lb tench came from Smallford a few seasons back. Is it still there and BIGGER?
