Riverside Road, in the heart of St
Albans, is a beautiful lake. When
the fishing is slow there's a variety of wildlife to observe,
including Kingfishers making this great venue a true city centre haven.
However, as previously reported, we did lose some stock to cormorants
last January and throughout 2013 the VAC fisheries team have worked hard
to secure good value new stock plus put in place floating islands and
other fish sanctuaries to keep the new stock safe.
Location, location, location.
Amazingly, although the VAC is a St Albans
club only 394 of our nearly 2,000 current registrations are St Albans
addresses. A recent exercise to map out the spread of our members
identified, as perhaps expected, 60% located in Hertfordshire, nearly 350
with London addresses and 152 in Bedfordshire. We also have members in
Somerset, Hampshire, Dorset, Lincolnshire and......County Galway !
The most recent introduction was over 500lb of quality roach and golden
rudd to over 1lb plus many hundreds of small chub. These fish, although
shoaled up in the middle areas, provided hectic sport for a number of
competitors in the recent VAC Christmas Match. Of the total of 150lb
weighed in, some 120lb was silver fish such as the 15lb weighed in by
David Lawrence in the picture below.
David's catch, caught on maggot over groundbait on the long pole was
just enough to take 3rd place with other good weights close behind. We
had 31 fishing, a great turn-out which also generated, via the admission
fee and raffle, close to £200 for Cancer Research and Grove House
Hospice. Full results, of course, on the VAC match pages.
As Winter starts to bite we expect these roach, rudd and chub to keep
feeding so members are encouraged to pay Riverside a visit or two before
the venue closes on February 25th for trout fishing. Even if you've not
got the time to wet a line, if you are able to pop in and enjoy a walk
around the lake, this will help support our efforts to keep the fish
secure at a time when they are most at risk.

This is probably the smallest fish featured in this section. But check out the
size relative to John Potters legs. Estimated at 5oz and caught from Marford it
was possibly above the 23 year old UK record.
Alan Thomas has had a great run of results on the VAC matches this season and
took top spot on the Riverside Christmas match from the new platforms down the
far end. Do not be put off by the current lack of features as there are lots of
fish down there
No snow as yet for Hertfordshire but if the freeze comes Riverside is still
beautiful and, if you can get through the ice, fish can be caught.
Above we have a reminder of warmer days when our resident tench juggler, Alan
Gardner, nearly lost his grip on this 5lb Smallford tench
