Winter Solstice

As I write these words it's the shortest day, the Winter Solstice and from here  on the days will start to get longer and we can look forward to warm Summer evenings by the water, carp crashing out in the distance and tench bubbling in close. There can't be many of us who do not enjoy such moments but there's also much to enjoy at this time of year, so long as you are wrapped up warm.

Across many VAC venues you will find members enjoying good sport and, in particular, this is when, on our running waters, the biggest roach, perch and chub slip up.

On our still waters, like Riverside (pictured above) you will need to look for some cover and colour in the water to locate the fish. Summer tactics of big handfuls of pellets and strong line are likely to lead to disappointment. Small baits, light feed and fishing on into the dusk will often bring surprisingly good results

As another example, catches of a dozen or more carp plus some good bream are not uncommon at Frogmore, try just a single red maggot over a sprinkling of micro pellet. Bellows Mill is also still producing excellent catches with the occasional surprise tench adding to bags of roach and perch.

For more news on VAC venues we now provide guest access to the fishery reports on our members-only forum.

* * Keep an eye out for cormorants * *
Please report any cormorants seen on the water when visiting Riverside, Frogmore and Bellows Mill in particular. Fishery managers contact details are in your membership book.

New memberships: Another great year of the VAC as membership numbers rush past the 2,150 number. If you're looking to join then you may wish to know that, as well as postal applications, you can sign-up at either Verulam Tackle Shop in St Albans or Colney Tackle in Hazeldine Rd, London Colney. For all the details please click the Subscriptions link above. Please be reminded that all able-bodied adult members are expected to undertake at least one work-party before the end of April and failure to do so attracts a work-party levy when renewing membership equal to the prevailing joining fee. This is to ensure that work-party obligations are not avoided by simply rejoining as a new member.
