The VAC are fortunate to be able to
offer members over 28 fisheries and most of these venues
include a number of waters or stretches of river. However, often
considered the jewel in the crown is our lake at Riverside Road in
St Albans, adjacent to the world famous Verulam golf course,
A few years ago a decline in results prompted a number of surveys
revealing a drop in fish population due to cormorants and, possibly,
crayfish predating on spawn.
A major investment programme was prepared and approved by the GC
which including progressive restocking and, more importantly,
enhancement of the fishery habitat with numerous floating islands
and other anti-cormorant measures. These efforts are now paying
dividends big time and members are enjoying prolific fishing with
the hard-fighting 'turbo' carp that fight like fish twice the size
plus numerous bream, crucians and quality roach.
This is not anecdotal, the match results this Summer have seen the
largest average weights on record with three-hour matches being won
with 30lb+ and most anglers catching in excess of 10lb. Early in
July, Steve Burfoot, pictured below, weighed in over 50lb to win a
small mid-week match. OK, so these are not crazy-weights as seen at
many of the 'muddy hole' commercial fisheries which are stuffed with
'easy-to-catch' carp but that's not the intention.
The evidence suggests that the new carp are thriving having grown on
over the last couple of years and will hopefully continue to do so
alongside the many older fish which run to about 16lb. And don't
ignore those other species as the bream go to over 5lb, the roach to
2lb and perch to 3lb. When you visit just remember to be prepared
with suitable tackle, an unhooking mat and lots of quality bait.

association. If you know of a possible great addition to our
fisheries please contact the Secretary (link on left).
The VAC match section has had a good start to 2016/17 with some
very close results and a few 'upsets'
Our Riverside results are way above expectation and Frogmore is
fishing well but more challenging due to the number of small fish.
It's a very sociable bunch of guys and new-comers are more than
welcome. Generally pools are optional so you could simply come along
and fish for the experience and the learning if you wish. Just make
sure you book in first as many venues have a limited number of pegs.

Always a pleasure to feature a female member. Here's Vicki Flaum with her new
personal best barbel of 8.05 from the Lea at Marford Farm
This 3.08 chub was also a PB for Vicki.
This chunky mirror, weighing around 15-16lb, is possibly the largest carp in
Riverside. Lucky captor is Tom Robins.
This is Tom again with arguably the most impressive specimen to feature here
this year, a 9lb tench from the Moor Mill Complex.
Dave Quinn's tench from Bellows Mill is harder to scale compared to Tom's but at
5.05 it's a cracking specimen from the venue, float-fished prawn being the
