Ol' Esox

This website has been refreshed over 160 times since 2000  yet I can't recall ever featuring a pike as the lead picture. In so many ways that's a real shame as older readers will probably have found memories of childhood fishing trips seeking pike, perhaps with tackle we know consider crude; snap tackle, large bungs, curly wire traces with monster swivels.

Predator fishing today, like all aspects of our sport, has enjoyed many major advances so it's a real shame that we don't see many large pike being reported from our waters compared, say to barbel, chub and carp.

It's therefore a rare delight to have Matt Westrap proudly displayed above with a beautiful specimen from our consortium waters at Fishers Green. At around 16lb it's no monster but that makes it no less special.

We know we have bigger pike on many of our waters; Moor Mill, Smallford, Aldenham plus the Ouse and Ivel. Or you could go for quantity; our Upper Ouse water at Tingewick is solid with small pike and big perch (so perhaps those jack's could lead you to a fat mamma as they shoal up for spawning). Plus, consider Bellow's Mill where multiple catches to nearly 10lb are not uncommon. Just remember to have suitable unhooking kit and follow our rules regarding live baits.

VAC Match Champion declared:
With an unbeatable score, despite three matches to go, Allan Bayman (right) was declared VAC Match Champ for the current season at the end of the Christmas match.

Allan, who was 2nd on the day, immediately lost his lucky streak as since then he has broken a couple of sections of his top-end pole and weighed in just 8oz on our last match at Lakeside Farm.

We have one last match in the current series; Tyler's Common in Essex is the venue - see the match pages for more details.

Valid from 1st Nov to 15th June

Location, location, location. Amazingly, although the VAC is a St Albans club only 394 of our nearly 2,000 current registrations are St Albans addresses. A recent exercise to map out the spread of our members identified, as perhaps expected, 60% located in Hertfordshire, nearly 350 with London addresses and 152 in Bedfordshire. We also have members in Somerset, Hampshire, Dorset, Lincolnshire and......County Galway !

Your Contribution

A real lack of contributions this month so here's some highlights from earlier issues.. Remember that the Webmaster welcomes your contributions.

Ken Major reported this 24lb pike from the Ivel back in 2012 .

Another from the archives, this pike was landed by Dan Mayles last May from Smallford.

The Ouzel adjacent to our two lakes at Bellow's Mill holds a number of pike and well worth exploring.

As a bit of late news, a team of VAC members came top in 2013 from eight teams competing a six-match series across venues in the South East.

Small jack's are surely welcome on cold Winter days. This one was caught by Nick Cerri from the aptly named Pike Pit at Moor Mill.
