Stop Press: Pike Match at Frogmore - April 8.

Another great year ahead

Looking back, 2017 was a excellent year for most Verulam waters. Whilst many of our waters continued to be their great consistent selves (I'm think Marford and Leasey Bridge here) others seemed to have moved up a notch (or two).

In particular, our Riverside Rd venue, set in the heart of St Albans City, has been particularly productive as the effort and expense of recent improvements start to pay off. Match weights, even in the depths of Winter, have been way above previous years and it's not just carp. These days a winning weight could easily include perch to 3lb, bream over 4lb and even chub.

Down at Frogmore, we did have some issues last Summer and number of mid-sized carp were lost. But sensible and prompt action by the fishery team allowed to fishery to reopen quicker than expected and regular visitors have reported plenty of carp to double-figures plus numerous bream, F1's and roach.

Unfortunately we have lost Aldenham reservoir but for those seeking big carp, Moor Mill has continued to produce the goods for those prepared to make the effort. The large head of carp do not give themselves up easily but once you've worked out what they want the rewards can be amazing as Robbie Brown proved. Along with the 31lb'er (above) he's had, in his own words, "dozens of others to 27lb". And, for variety, a few big tench to 8.04 (see right).

Half-season membership is still available. If you were previously a member last season there's no need to pay the joining fee again although if you were required to complete a work party and didn't get to do one then the levy will apply. Members whose tickets expired in earlier seasons will need to pay the joining fee again, please use your original member ID. For more information and the forms, please go to our subscriptions page.

Eventful events...
Terry Lathwell was pleased he signed up for the VAC day-trip to the lower River Itchen. Whilst some were chasing the abundant grayling and brown trout, or seeking monster roach, Terry was focussed on getting one of the elusive Itchen barbel. As you can see, he was exceptionally successful with the 16.10 monster, adding another big double to complete the brace before the long drive home.

Match News

As to be expected at this time of year it's been tough going. However, Riverside has continued to produce fish, despite the cold and snow, with weights over 20lb winning the mid-week matches.

The Championship is, at the time of writing, down to the last couple of matches, with Colin Rennision odds-on to win.

Whilst there's still demand Steve Burfoot is still running our Tuesday matches at Riverside (until it closes for trout fishing in February) as well as at Frogmore.  For more details on all VAC fixtures check out the match pages via the link top-left.

A reminder that we have a great deal for members at Willow Lakes at London Colney. Our members get a discount of 4 off any ticket price. As a one-rod day-ticket normally costs 7 that means members get a days' fishing for just 3. Check out the venues website and remember to follow all the rules.

The VAC Christmas match came close to being cancelled but 17 managed to get the Riverside and most had a bite or two.

Chris Stride rocked the national record with this 3oz ruffe from Riverside

Andy Trigg's first match back at Frogmore produced this 12.10 common.
