Brrrr..winter draws on....

No-one should be too critical of what are known as butterfly anglers. You know, the anglers who only come out to wet a line when the weather is  pleasant and the fish are feeding strongly. We fish for the fun of it and no point in going if you're not going to enjoy it, surely?

Danny Henwood with a Marford long-walk 'snow' barbel from a few years back.

Which is a bit of a shame really as they are missing out on not only some challenging and very rewarding opportunities but also a chance to see nature stripped back through the frost, ice and perhaps snow. You will be waiting longer for bites and definitely need to give more thought as to where you fish, when you fish and how you fish. But whilst waiting there's every likelihood you will have for company a hungry robin and, to show you how it's done, that most royal of anglers, the Kingfisher. Less welcome of course are the mink. foxes and possibly otters that could cross your path, but still fascinating nonetheless.

Half-Season Membership - If you've not got around to joining the VAC now's the time to do it as for half the full season price (plus joining fee where applicable) you get to fish all VAC waters right up until June 15 2017. River venues, of course, are still subject to the current close-season restrictions. Note: cut-off this year will be end March.

If you have a Paypal account you can join and pay in a matter of minutes and your membership pack will be sent to you within a few days. Perfect if you fancy a Winter campaign on one of our big carp waters, a chance of a double-figure barbel from the rivers or even a 20lb grass carp from Bellows Mill.

So don't delay, join today - click here for all the details

CHANGED: After refreshing the VAC home pages every month or two since March 2000 I've decided to slow things down a little pending a complete site makeover hopefully later in 2017. So, for the time being, each quarter of the calendar year will see a fresh home page published rather than monthly or bi-monthly. Any urgent notices, e.g. new venues, will be added as and when to the existing pages. As ever, I would love to receive your contributions, be they pictures, articles or just feedback. And remember that you can look back at all the old issues via the Archive link. Thanks....Stan, Webmaster

Match News -

Our final match saw us at Lakeside Farm. This venue is popular as it produces good sport for roach and skimmers with the odd carp.

However, this year it fished terribly with the majority failing to get a bite let alone a fish ! Those on the left bank between them had 1 1/2oz perch. The only one of the front runners to catch was Allan Bayman; his 2nd on the day secured the points needed to overtake Brian Lakin on the day and his 3rd championship title.

It's so good to be able to report that the match results on our home waters have been better than anyone can remember with double-figure weights of over 20lb being needed to win even when frozen. In the warmer months venue records were being broken and the prospects for 2017/18 look excellent.

We are a very sociable bunch of guys and new-comers are more than welcome. Generally pools are optional so you could simply come along and fish for the experience and the learning if you wish.

Allan Bayman retains his Championship title. Seen above with his winning catch at Lakeside from 2016 when he had significantly more than the 4lb that was enough for 2nd on the day.
