Riverside Revival

It was nearly 55 years ago when the VAC first excavated the former cress beds between the Verulam golf course and the former St Albans to Hatfield branch line.

Many changes have been made over the years but, if you look closely in some areas, you can still see the forgotten remains of timbers used for swims that only made sense in the days of 10ft split-cane rods.

Considered the jewel in the VAC crown this 50+ peg water has always aimed to offer something for everyone, including trout fishing in the early spring. But a few years back catches were declining, especially of smaller fish, and the General Committee agreed and actioned a redevelopment plan to bring back the glory days.

That plan is now paying off as evidenced with match results this season. With reworked banks (still lots to do), numerous floating islands to provide sanctuary for the fish from winter cormorants and generous restocking policies almost every swim is capable of 25lb+ catches. Current 5hr record is 68lb.

It's not all carp either. Catches are often made up of carp plus bream to 4lb, crucians to 1lb, crucian hybrids to 3lb, roach, rudd, perch and even the odd chub.

Alan Thomas with a recent 43lb match catch
So if you a looking for a comfortable, safe, picturesque fishery where you can get bites all day long from fish that tug back then surely the VAC's Riverside Rd, in the heart of St Albans, is for you.

And it's not just about the fishing
The redevelopment plan included provision for a permanent club house to replace the various units installed over the years. After longer-than-expected delays with permission and licenses, work is now well underway.

The new building, when completed will provide meeting rooms for club business plus classroom coaching sessions. A new kitchen facility will be installed to allow the provision of refreshments for club matches and open days along with a new toilet block to replace the current portacabins.

Match News

Alan Thomas did well on a hot day Tuesday at Riverside out on peg 30 to net nearly 43lb. His catch included the stunning (or is that stunned) 'Butterscotch',  a 9lb..ish yellow ghost koi that's been around for years (click here for a pic in 2005), but never seems to reach double-figures.

But Al's weight was someway behind the webmaster's weight of 60.05, a catch of about 20 or so carp plus a few crucians from ever-reliable peg 22. Backup weights were excellent, all but one weighing in over 20lb.

Always more welcome on our Tuesday matches. For more details on all VAC fixtures check out the match pages via the link top-left.

A reminder that we have a great deal for members at Willow Lakes at London Colney. Our members get a discount of 4 off any ticket price. As a one-rod day-ticket normally costs 7 that means members get a days' fishing for just 3. Check out the venues website and remember to follow all the rules.

CHANGED:
After refreshing the VAC home pages every month or two since March 2000 I've decided to slow things down a little pending a complete site makeover hopefully in 2018. So, for the time being, each quarter of the calendar year will see a fresh home page published rather than monthly or bi-monthly. Any urgent notices, e.g. new venues, will be added as and when to the existing pages. As ever, I would love to receive your contributions, be they pictures, articles or just feedback. And remember that you can look back at all the old issues via the Archive link. Thanks....Stan, Webmaster

Mick Salmon netted this 12.03 barbel from one of our shared sections of the Lea.

This 8.04 tench was caught by Robbie Brown from Moor Mill's Leather Pit. Much bigger tench have been caught in the past to over 12lb.

VAC Chairman Ash Adams proved he still knows how to win a match, taking 1st place on the VAC's fixture at Redbridge Lakes.

Andy Zneimer, who's had a cracking run in his first ever evening match series, found time for a late session at Leasey Bridge. This 15.08 carp is one of the best of many specimens he's reported.
